Miss Sinclair's Farewell

Miss Sinclair's grocery shop just round the corner from Heriot Row was a popular place to shop, and order deliveries, from the 1940s onwards. Forty years on, Miss Sinclair decided to retire. The ladies of Heriot Row made a collection and organised a thank-you event in the home of Lord and Lady Dunpark at No 8 Heriot Row. He made a kind speech. Her present - a handbag containing banknotes - was handed over. 

It became clear that Miss Sinclair had prepared a response as she produced a mysterious sheet of paper. She told the gathering that it contained the Dunparks' first ever grocery order, which she would read out. A look of anxiety passed over the faces of the hosts - what was about to be revealed? They need not have worried. Root vegetables and cleaning products dominated.
