People
Many famous and high achieving people have lived in Heriot Row over the years - writers, scientists and engineers, doctors, lawyers, politicians, artists and musicians, adventurers and philanthropists.
We know of some because they wrote about their lives (Robert Louis Stevenson, Robert Munro and Elizabeth Grant, for example) and some because their achievements were recorded by others.
We have included longtime residents and others who lived in the street only as children or for a short time. Considering them as a group it is remarkable how wide were their talents and how far many of them travelled in their lifetimes.
In their own way they typify Scotland in the 19th and 20th centuries - the dominance of the professions, the rush to empire, the creative spirit and from time to time the feet of clay.
